Automatic chest compressions are used when effective manual CPR is not possible.
Effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) requires a high level of excellence to positively impact the survival rate of a cardiac arrest victim. This can be difficult to impossible to do manually depending on the situation where fatigue, understaffing in a mass casualty incident, or difficult patient transport (e.g., in an ambulance or hospital) prevent the patient from delivering effective/consistent compressions.
